The outdoors

"It's really hot with the sun scorching down on me. My cap provides very little protection and I am grateful for loading on the sunblock this morning. Ah at last there's relief ahead. As I climb the last part of that mountain stretch I see the waterfall ahead. Beautiful fresh water gushing down forming a stream as it continues its path down. An oasis. Backpack is off and I'm splashing in the cool water and taking in the unbelievable surroundings. If I could do this everyday I would."

I choose the outdoors. I love nature, waterfalls, trees and fresh air. I am definitely not a mall or indoor person:-). When my daughters were younger they would get so upset with me as I would not take them to the mall but on picnics instead. I remember I used to pack our Sunday lunch in a basket and head to Durban Botanical Gardens. I would lay out a picnic and they would play around, climb trees and feed the ducks.

I read that being in nature has many healing benefits:

  • like increased feelings of calmness, endorphin levels and dopamine production (promotes happiness) and decreased symptoms of anxiety, loneliness, depression and irritability.

  • Boosts vitamin D, better sleep and improved immune system

  • You feel happier, more creative and develop a deep sense of wellbeing.

  • Even the simple act of being barefoot in grass daily can have a profound effect on health and reducing negative energy.

If like me, you work long hours on the computer and indoors then being outdoors just resets and refreshes your mind and body. Also, I bring the outdoors to me. Inside my work space and on my balcony I have many plants, a water feature and rocks (semi-precious stones). I work surrounded by plants and whenever I feel I need a break I spend time nurturing them.

Watching a plant or seedling grow into something beautiful, inspires something deep inside. Growth and change is what makes life a beautiful adventure.

Try it for yourself!
